Hi, we came together to create TherapistsForBlackGirls.com as a response to what out clients wanted and needed. We are all trained therapists, and generally every therapist at some point goes into therapy as part of their training to enrich their understanding of themselves and work through their own issues so they aren't played out in your therapy sessions. What did we, a collective of black, brown, yellow and white women find? That the sexism and racism that women of girls of color treated in society also spreads into our therapy sessions. Individually we could each recall these hardships and experiences of asking for help and not getting the help we needed, but being put in the position of defending ourselves and our actions to a therapist who just didn't "get" us. As professional helpers we have also found that our clients crave, need, desire and appreciate being seen, understood and heard by us. So we created TherapistsForBlackGirls so we can treat us! In the racially appropriate and thoughtful manner the help is needed in.
